This post is sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Take a look at Steve Martin's business card. I love it because it brings to light the lack of meaning we often feel during the daily routine of work life.

When I was new to the workforce, I saw two ends of a spectrum. On one end, risking one's life to save dying children, and on the other end, hedge-fund banking to make millions.

If you see the work world that way, then you feel compelled to choose between making good money or doing good deeds. But at this point, I don’t think the world breaks down like that. I think all jobs are meaningful.

    1. Meaningfulness comes from relationships.
My introduction to this way of thinking was Sonja Lyubomirsky’s research about happiness and work (compiled into a book I like: The How of Happiness.) She found that janitors are happier than lawyers and the discrepancy arises from the amount of meaningfulness they perceived in their work.

The janitors felt that they were helping people by keeping the school running well. They knew the students and the teachers and they had a nice relationship with them: people asked for help, the janitor gave help, the person thanked the janitor.

With the lawyers, it’s the opposite. People hate having to ask a lawyer for help. They want the lawyer to solve their problems, but in general, you only call a lawyer when you have a problem you will not be able to get out of without one. So the lawyer can’t really make people feel good. On top of that, a lawyer charges by the hour so there is almost never a thank you in exchange for a small piece of work. (More rationale for ditching your dreams of law school.)

    2. Meaningfulness comes from feeling some control.
Having control over one’s job and an ability to make a difference — through meeting goals, saving lives, solving problems — is what enables people to enjoy their work, according to research published in The Economist. The prestige of the given job is not nearly as important as being able to have an effect. If jobs are not challenging enough, then people are not happy because they don’t have a feeling of affecting someone else. People like being part of a group, they like being able to contribute.

Relative to the rest of life, work is predictable. Kids are totally unpredictable, health is unpredictable, friends and family are wild cards, but there are rules for work that people follow. Those generally accepted rules are what makes work a safe place to be.

    3. Management creates meaning
The relationship between a boss and an employee should be very meaningful. Good management is actually about being nice. A manager’s job is to make people shine, to show them they can do more than they ever imagined and to make employees excited to come to work. Management’s job is to create meaningful work.

In the same vein, an employee’s job is to make their boss’s life better. Whatever you were hired for, whatever that job description said, the bottom line is that you are there to solve your boss’s problems. You will feel good at work if you are making your boss happy–it’s a symbiotic relationship.

    4. Creating meaning yourself is empowering.
To be clear, a job does not give your life meaning. How you treat people and how you relate to communities and society is where you get your meaning. Work is just a great platform to create that meaning. You can choose whether or not you make your work meaningful. You can wait for someone else to magically anoint your job with meaning. But you will be waiting a long time. Instead, make work meaningful yourself. It’s an act of freedom, taking your life into your own hands.

    5. Look for opportunities.
My step-mom had cancer for more than a decade. She had a breast removed, she went into remission, then back to the hospital, then remission. At first I thought her life was becoming crazy and how could she cope? But then I saw that the best thing for her was that she kept going to work. The stability in her life was her job. She couldn’t control the cancer, or the treatments, or her energy, but she could control her workload and she could meet her goals when she was there.

When she couldn’t be at the office, her co-workers took over her workload so her job would be there for her when she returned. Every time.

When an office comes together to support someone in crisis the whole office is infused with meaning. The strength they gave my step-mom by enabling her to come to work, in turn gave strength to the family members trying to help take care of her.

Work has meaning because it provides stability in our lives, and we create meaning by helping co-workers to use that stability to be brave and strong in the rest of life.

Look around you, all the time–look for people at work who need help with their work.  Caring for your co-workers might be the most meaningful part of work for all of us.

I just confirmed something very cool. Something that I had suspected, but needed data to confirm. One of the big things for us at Medomak is the food. The reality is that nobody wants to eat bad food on their vacation and camps in general have a reputation for bad food. So we put money and effort into making sure the food is of a quality we are proud of.

So for the past couple of years, we have had a dairy cow…which means fresh milk, fresh cream, fresh butter, fresh cheese, fresh ice cream, etc… And this year we decided that we were going to try and grow as much of our vegetables as possible. Primarily we needed lettuce and other greens, but tomatoes, broccoli, garlic, peas, edamame, cucumbers, squash also were in the plan. Growing on a small level wasn’t hard, but we needed to grow large numbers of veggies, in succession, so that each week would have adequate amounts for our campers. So figure that on a given week, we needed enough lettuce and other veggies for anywhere from 50-120 people. And the scary part was that since we had to plant in April, we weren’t even 100% sure of our final number of campers.
Anyhow, onto the cool part…the cost. I had assumed that the labor and materials (seeds, fertilizer, etc…) would be so expensive as to make it prohibitive (we convinced ourselves to go ahead and try anyway because we figured the programming aspect would justify some of the expense). What we found out was even with all the costs of the cow and the production garden added in (labor and materials), our food costs stayed about even in comparison to our previous years! I was amazed. We all know just by comparing the cost of a head of lettuce at the local grocery store vs. the cost of an organic head of lettuce at the health food store, that it is cheaper to get the non-organic (did I mention our gardens are organic?). But hey, on our scale, it was cost neutral to grow our own veggies and get our own milk rather than get it from one of the big food distributors most camps and restaurants use.
If anyone is interested in talking with me about the details of how we were able to offer organic vegetables and milk for the same cost as non-organic, food service-distributed veggies and milk, give me a shout. I’m happy to go into the costs we incurred and we can compare our experiences. Anyway, it was a good season with FRESH, TASTY food that WE grew ourselves. And it didn’t cost us anything additional. WIN-WIN!

You hear all this talk aobut how you have to march to your own drummer, think out of the box, blah blah. The truth is, you can’t change anything until you know all the rules.

Advice admonishing you to break rules is so shallow. How can you break rules without learning them first? People who understand all the rules know intuitively how to break them because they know the rules that really are not working. People who do not know rules are not breaking rules. They are annoying people.

Because for the most part, rules are there to make peoples’ lives easier. There are lots of us in society, in the workplace, driving through intersections. If we don’t have rules there is chaos. Some rules need changing, but you can’t tell that until you know the rules and how they work together.

So instead of giving you advice on how to break the rules, I’m going to give you advice on how to learn them fast.

      1. Learn multiple sets of rules at the same time.

The more types of rules you learn, the faster you get at learning them. This is, basically, what a liberal arts education is – learning systems in disparate categories.

I’m fascinated by the yarn bombers. Here’s a photo of some of their work:

What makes the yarn bombers so fascinating to me is the practitioners have learned two sets of rules that don’t usually go together: How to do yarn work at a high enough level to do it on the street, fast and furtively.  And how to create street art in a way that has social impact, defies arrest, and leverages networking tools to pass along knowledge.

      2. Learn rules you think you’ll have no use for.

Revolutionaries never know where they will land. Because revolutionaries seldom set out to make huge change – they just want to meet their goals, which, at the onset seem completely reasonable – too reasonable to require revolution. The American Revolution is a good example of this.  So is the invention of the web browser.

The fact that most revolutionaries are people who have reasonable, thought-out goals, means that most have a whole catalogue of rules in their heads that they have collected as a way to meet their goals. Marc Andressen, for example, went to school for years to learn to code before he developed a graphical web browser.

Anthony Weiner is my favorite example of having learned a cataloge of rules. He is a Congressional representative from New York, and is renown for colorful antics on the House Floor. In general, he is simply passionate about pushing the very liberal agenda of his NYC constituents. But he is so fun to watch that if Congress would give him more time at the microphone, C-Span might be interesting enough to go mainstream.

Here is a video of Weiner leveraging his encyclopediac knowledge of Parliamentary Procedure to yell over a fellow legislator.

      3. You need to know what’s expected to do what’s unexpected.

Great ideas challenge expectations. Which means  you can’t create anything innovative without understanding what has already been done. My favorite example of this is the freshman writing course I taught at Boston University. Most of the students had never read literature beyond the Western canon. So they wrote tales of sex and drugs as if they were breaking new ground.

In fact, it had all been done, since the time of Chaucer. It’s just that my class was filled with writers who don’t read.

You can’t do that. You can’t disrupt ways of thinking, or ways of doing, without understanding those ways.

Mary Flanagan is a professor of film and new media at Dartmouth college.  She creates video games where there is no traditional game hierarchy. Instead of going from one level to the next, a player completes a task and then loops around to do it again – like catching groceries with a paper bag, or laying off a slew of workers and replacing them.  During an interview with ArtNews, Flanagan summarizes her approach as “playing with conventions and expectations.”

Which is, of course, the approach of most artistic revolutionaries, which is why you need to know the rules that have created a set of audience expectations.

      4. Leverage the rules you already know.

The young, groundbreaking entrepreneurs establish companies in a field where they are already an expert. Mark Zuckerberg, for example, started writing code in junior high school, and he started not getting dates in junior high. So by the time he got to Harvard he was ready to break the rules in those categories.

Tavi Gevinson had been studying fashion at home and writing in school for years and years. So that, although her life is relatively short (she’s a freshman in high school) she knows enough on these topics to infuse her Generation Z sensibilities to fashion blogging in a refreshing way to rise to the top in the fashion world.

      5. Don’t snub your nose at corporate life.

I spent a lot of time in corporate America learning the rules. I realized that no one cared about my ideas, so I did my own stuff on the side, while I spent my days at Ingram Micro learning how corporate hierarchies function. I asked lots of questions about office politics, and salaries, and promotions. I did very little work but, at that time, other people knew very little about the Internet so they could imagine that I was doing more work than I was doing.

I learned how to do only work that people notice. I learned how to make people like me whether or not they liked the work I do. I learned what is important in corporate life (dress code) and what is unimportant (good grammar).

The safety and structure of corporate life is a great place to learn the rules, so it’s no surprise that many of the rule breakers spend a good part of their early career navigating the Fortune 500.

The point I want to drive home here is that you can’t think of ways to disrupt the status quo at its core until you understand the status quo at it’s core. You don’t need to pay your dues, but you do need to understand the field you’re playing in.

The corporate ladder was a slow way to learn rules by allowing someone else to set your timetable and your career goals. Learning the rules is still something you have to do, but you can make your own path for learning that is fast and lethal and makes learning the rules look more exciting than ever before.

This is a guest post by my older brother, Dee, from The Best Degrees and SICerts.

Confidence is one of the top traits that attracts women. In fact, I would put confidence above money and looks. Remember Midori’s post on alpha males? Well, one of the main differences between the alpha male and the average guy is confidence. The alpha male exudes confidence while the average guy gives off an insecure, unsure, or nervous vibe.

A lack of confidence keeps you from attracting more women. But worse than that, many guys are not even trying to meet and pursue girls because they are not confident.

Fortunately, confidence is not a mysterious inborn trait that only a select few have. You can do certain things to increase your confidence and improve your interactions with women. But you will have to put in some hard work and be patient, since change doesn’t happen overnight.

      What Makes People Confident?

To answer this question, a good place to look is the entertainment industry. For example, imagine that you are a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars.” However, the producers change the rules for practice time. You are only given 30 minutes to practice with your partner before you go onstage to perform. Would you be confident? Probably not.

The producers of the show give the contestants a lot of time to work on their dance moves and pair them with a professional dancer so they can learn and become better dancers. As a result, by the time they perform, they look confident because they’ve worked really hard and they’ve gotten great coaching.

Here’s my point: confidence is the byproduct of competence. If you are good at something, you will be confident at it.

Once you realize this, then it’s a simple process to think of the things that make you less confident around women and become competent in them.

Fill this blank: If I __________, I would be more confident.

For example, one common thing that guys have problems with is knowing what to say. Many guys are speechless around women. They don’t know what to say to beautiful women.

Well, there are many resources out there to help you. Do some research and find some tips that fit your personality. You might find some pickup lines, questions to ask, stories to tell, or other things to say to create interesting conversations.

Next, memorize those things so you won’t be caught speechless. You can even practice in the mirror to improve your delivery.

Then, start applying what you learned in social situations. At this point, it helps a lot to think of your interactions with girls as a learning experiences, as practice sessions. Don’t see them as high pressure events. There’s no pressure because you’re seeking to improve. Have fun.

During this process, continually evaluate your results. Some lines will work better than others. Stick with those and discard the rest. Of course, feel free to keep doing research to find new techniques and lines to try.

Over time, if you do these steps, you will become skilled at conversing with women and your confidence will increase.

      Build Confidence in Any Area

You can become competent in just about anything so start working on areas in your life that keep you from being more confident. The key is to have a learning mindset and then put in the effort to improve yourself.

Here are some common things that you may need to work on to increase your confidence:

      • Dealing with nervousness
      • Making money
      • Dressing well
      • Transforming into an alpha male

Find good resources to deal with the areas where you need help and become competent in them through hard work and practice.

This is a guest post from Fabian Kruse. His blog is The Friendly Anarchist.

May you live in interesting times,” a Chinese curse goes. It’s true: “Interestingness” is a dangerously broad term. Having a chronic illness can be interesting but it sucks. Wars can be interesting – but they suck even more. And maybe you too have used the classical “It tastes … interesting”-excuse when your dinner host didn’t really have a clue about cooking. Not as bad as wars and chronic illnesses, but still kind of sucky.

But interestingness in general is a lot more positive. Interestingness is finding the experiences that shape us as human beings, and enjoying them to the max. What we really don’t want is the bullshit part of life.

As far as I can see it, most of us want to live our lives something like this:

Sure, a bit more interestingness would be nice, but let’s be realistic, right? At least we’ll avoid the bullshit.

      1. You can never make everything all nice, so stop trying.

Or that’s that we think. Because when we want to avoid bullshit so hard, we decide to play it safe. But “play it safe” too much and you’ll suffer:

      • Play-it-safe is what keeps us in our boring job.
      • Play-it-safe is what keeps us in our houses.
      • Play it safe is what keeps us from building a business.
      • Play it safe is what keeps us from writing about controversial topics.

We end up with a pretty normal, uninteresting life. But notice that you don’t ever get rid of bullshit completely. Stress at work, a flooded house (my windows aren’t the best, it seems), a stolen car, a break-up after a long relationship—you can’t avoid these things completely.

But because we try so hard, because of attempting to “play it safe”, we unintentionally drown our interestingness levels, and end up with a life like this:

      2. Don’t mistake worry for reality.

The problems that really happen in our lives don’t account for the full 20% of bullshit. Realistically, it’s more like 2% bullshit and 18% worries:

      • It’s not losing our job, it’s worrying that we might get fired.
      • It’s not really that the house floods, it’s worrying that it might get flooded; and then, worrying about what insurance to get, and where to earn the money to pay for it.
      • Will the same insurance cover the car? And should we really park it in that dark alley, or rather take it to a supervised parking lot, paying an hour for someone to look after it?

Worrying too much is just not helpful. Especially if we consider that we’ve only got this one life.

I am great at worrying. For example, as a dogsitter I permanently worry that one of the dogs could get seriously ill. Even though these worries are exaggerated, I’ll be happy once my wife comes back to look after them again.

As kids, we still play freely and explore the world as if it was a big and beautiful Wonderland. Sometimes we fall down, sometimes we rip our clothes, sometimes we scratch our elbows. And still, we continue to explore, we continue to live an interesting life.

But then, over the years at school, we become more and more serious. And worried. The older we get, the more we learn to focus on avoiding bullshit and becoming upright citizens. Normality grows, worries grow, interestingness almost disappears. We go from Wonderland to Worryland.

      3. Use people with interesting lives as role models; pay attention to what they don’t do.

I have some friends who live a very different life. I live it myself at times, and I see a couple of people on the web that seem to be living it, too. This other model looks something like this:

You see this? That’s a 50% increase in interestingness! Bullshit levels are down, as is normality. And while normality makes us comfortable, it also leads to the boredom. So if we ever feel that there’s a bit too much normality in our lives, we could maybe learn something here.

The mistake when trying to find out about interestingness is to look at what interesting people are actually doing. Because this only leads to even more passivity on the side of the spectator:

      • “Oh, Tyler Tervooren can jump out of an airplane, but I couldn’t possibly do that because I don’t fly. Climate change is more important than having fun.”
      • “Oh, Sean Ogle is traveling to South East Asia and checking off the points on his bucket list, but I couldn’t possibly do that because I love my home and wouldn’t want to leave.”
      • “Oh, Karol Gadja is building a business around his Ridiculously Extraordinary blog, but I couldn’t possibly do that because I haven’t got any idea of internet marketing and writing.”

One thing is for sure: You will always find reasons not to do something interesting, even if other people are doing it. Often enough, these reasons will be pretty good. Sometimes, they won’t. But you’ll definitely find some!

I believe we have to look at what these people are not doing. And then we have to stop doing that, too. For example:

      • Stop worrying 18% of your life.
      • Stop overthinking everything.
      • Stop remaining seated comfortably.
      • Stop accepting things as they are, even if they suck.
      • Stop taking the path of least resistance.
      • Stop living the life other people planned for you.
      • Stop worrying 18% of your life. (This comes twice, as it’s really the basics.)

Interesting people get rid of unnecessary worries – and accept that a little more real bullshit might turn up in their lives once they start stepping out of their comfort zone. If you do a lot more interesting things, from time to time you risk a bit more bullshit.

      4. Make yourself uncomfortable.

The good thing is that interestingness doesn’t always have to be jumping from airplanes.

      • Try unknown food at your supermarket.
      • Go to a new restaurant.
      • Watch a recommended movie from a genre you normally ignore.
      • Engage in a street fight.
      • Quit your boring job.
      • Sell everything you own.
      • Raise five children.

There’s one thing interesting lives have in common, though: you feel at least a tiny bit uncomfortable. Anxiety is the perfect indicator. Instead of worrying about or trying to ignore it, maybe we should let it be our guide.

More than 100,000 jobs for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are available. This was confirmed in the 1st RP-Qatar Joint Committee Meeting in Bohol recently when labor officials from the Philippines and Qatar convened the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported in April 1.

Roque the two delegations from the Philippines and Qatar also discussed the employment prospects for OFWs in Qatar. He said Qatar approved a total of 296,787 work visas for OFWs between October 2008 to March 2009 out of which about 190,000 were already filled up, indicating that over 100,000 work visas are still available for OFWs.
